Little Chick: Three Little Stories    by Amy Hest & Anita Jeram Order:  USA  Can Candlewick, 2012 (2012) Hardcover     Reviewed by Bob Walch This boxed set of three small board books may easily fit in the palm of your hand but it still packs an entertainment punch for youngsters two years of age and up. The three stories which feature Little Chick and Old-Auntie highlight the curiosity and naiveté of this delightful, pint-sized character. In The Kite That Would Not Fly, Little Chick tries to launch a large leaf into the sky. The makeshift kite refuses to cooperate and poor Little Chick just can't get it airborne. Then Old-Auntie suggests that Little Chick pull the leaf to the top of a hill where the wind can help get it moving. Of course, that does the trick and 'Whooosh!', up goes the leaf into the sky. In The Carrot That Would Not Grow, a slow growing vegetable perplexes Little Chick, while in The Starry Night, Little Chick tries to reach for her favorite star. In both situations the wise and patient Old-Auntie resolves the vexing dilemmas that Little Chick faces. Although these board books are under 4 x 4 inches in size, the print is easy to read and the illustrations are big enough for a small child to enjoy. The handy box will keep the three books together and they are just right for a toddler to hold (and perhaps throw) and turn the pages.
