Kaszuba Locke Frances Watson's The Greatest Sheep in History is the third in a series starring trainee Superheroes Ernie and Maud. As it opens, Ernie discusses a school assignment to write about a hero in history; his source is a library book, The Greatest People in History. Maud inquires whether there are any historical sheep heroes, but gets no answer. She mentions the self-porpoise (self-portrait) she is doing for art class. The #32 Main Street Superheroes Society members meet to discuss plans to travel on Saturday to the annual National Superheroes Conference in Thomastown. Ernie and Maud are thrilled as they will meet hundreds of Superheroes from all over the country, and participate in seminars and courses. Ernie gets more excited when he learns that his favorite TV Superhero, The Daring Dynamo, will be a special guest, arriving by air balloon! Stupendous Sue, president of the Superheroes Society National Headquarters, begins her opening speech, when something or someone races VERY, VERY FAST across the stage and steals her notes! A thin voice with strange cackles calls out: 'Run, run, as fast as you can, / You can' catch me - / I'm Chicken George'. The incident, which leaves Sue looking more 'stupefied than stupendous', calls for a meeting of Branch presidents to explore how to deal with the situation-at-hand. This third chapter book in the habit-forming series is a stand-alone read, but I recommend enjoying the first and second, too. Each book addresses the theme of bravery; Superheroes different in each and every way; and the value of friendship.
