series, this book is filled with information about crocodilians, lizards, snakes and tortoises and turtles.
T
he opening two chapters are quite general and look at reptiles past and present and their shared features. Then it is on to a more detailed look at specific reptiles, like the Nile Crocodile, Regal Horned Lizard, Burmese Python and Hawksbill Turtle. These are just a few of the actual reptiles, to which the author devotes a two page spread.
O
ne large color illustration dominates each spread along with a series of smaller, more detailed pictures. For example, the Tokay Gecko spread features a picture of the gecko's eggs and its toes plus other small illustrations of its size in relation to a human hand, a microscopic look at the hairs on its toes, and a photo of how it blends into its natural environment. Each selection also features a small world map that shows where the reptile can be found.
O
ne cautionary note: Although this is an excellent book, I think it should be used only with mature readers. It is intended for youngsters eight years of age and older. Some of the large 3-D illustrations can be a little scary, especially the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and the crocodile, and therefore this book may not be appropriate for younger children.
