Hey Diddle, Diddle: A Food Chain Tale    by Pam Kapchinske & Sherry Rogers Order:  USA  Can Arbordale, 2011 (2011) Hardcover, Softcover     Reviewed by Lyn Seippel Hey Diddle, Diddle gives a simple overview of how a food chain works. The animals themselves tell their story in rhyme, which makes the book easy to read again and again. It is a very basic book for children as young as four and a nice introduction for ecosystems both in and out of the water. It would've been nice if instead of using generic types of animals, the writer and illustrator had been more specific and labeled the critters. Using actual animals would give another dimension to this book. The illustrations are vaguely cartoonish and use generic species instead of accurate depictions of real animals. This is a missed educational opportunity, but the book still has a lot to offer. Pages for Creative Minds fill the last four pages. Quizzes are given on animal classifications, physical adaptations, and the food chain, and the ecosystem. More information is offered on the Sylvan Dell website.
