J. Henderson's action packed urban fantasy series starring magical adept Professor Piers Knight, a blend of sorceror and Indiana Jones. This episode begins with Piers saving the world after a crack in space and time allows 'a vast and terrible presence to filter through from a stark and sterile cosmos it had consumed and left barren long ago'. How, you ask? With the help of his beautiful summer intern, Bridget, Piers enlisted odd, assorted groups at short notice - from a Methodist choir to the Brooklyn Gay Men's Polka Partiteers - to offer up to the monstrous being Earth's ultimate weapon, 'an excess of joy'. Unfortunately, after their success, Bridget's internship ended and she returned to her home in Montana. Piers' new intern is her polar opposite. George Rainert is a sagging, overweight young high tech genius who lacks social skills. But Piers and George don't have much time to learn to work together as the previous catastrophe caused Great Old Ones (dragons) to awaken early from their long slumber and return to the world once more, with very different agendas for mankind. Complicating matters is the arrival of a long lost love, Tian Lu, to warn Piers of the dragons' return. Soon afterwards, government agents show up and escort Piers, Tian and George to Washington. There Piers is briefly abducted by a very old acquaintance, who later manifests in human form to warn of yet another end-of-the-world crisis looming. There are attacks, betrayals, and a surprising alliance. The good guys face an unequal battle. Fortunately George contributes a brilliant out-of-the-box idea to balance the scales. If you're looking for a fast urban fantasy read that doesn't take itself too seriously, then try these Knight episodes. Though the dialogue is occasionally on the hokey side, there's plenty of action and it's all good, old-fashioned fun.
