This young lady's story reads like one out of the Arabian Nights. Born into a noble Persian family in about 1220 AD, Qutlugh Yerkan Khatun was sold into slavery, adopted by a rich merchant and married a number of times to royalty before finally finding her real Prince Charming. With her marriage to Qutb al-Din, the woman entered upon a happy union that eventually saw her become ruler of their kingdom when he died 16 years later. She remained in power for 26 years and ruled Kirman with intelligence, compassion and grace. Not only does this biography chart Qutlugh Terkan Khatun's life and rule, but it also looks at what she wore and what people ate during her lifetime. Once part of the Mongol empire, Kirman was located in an area that is today encompassed by Iran. The other titles in this interesting and well written series include Hatshepsut of Egypt, Artemisia of Caria, Sorghaghtani of Mongolia, Isabella of Castile, and Nur Jahan of India. After reading just one of these books you'll probably want to obtain the others as well.
