G
ood Night, Chickie
is a book for the very youngest of children, who are scared to go to bed for fear their moms will leave the house.
A
little chick, who sleeps with his little stuffed blue bunny, continually calls his mother back to his room after being put to bed. His excuses are many (the bunny has to go to the bathroom, the bunny is scared of the dark, etc..) He primarily needs to reassure his stuffed bunny that mom is not going out. After receiving numerous reassurances from a VERY patient Mother Hen, Chickie (and his bunny) are finally able to go to sleep, worry-free.
A
similarly-themed book is
Llama, Llama Red Pajama
by Ann Dewdney.
T
he prose is simple and spare, but the message is clear: mommy is always here, even when you're asleep. The drawings are uncomplicated, which is a good fit with the basic text.
