he quirky behavior that has made this series so popular is in evidence once again as the two central characters, Elephant & Piggie, discover that they are in a book.
O
nce the pair figures out that the person spying on them is actually '
a reader
', the two friends begin to have some fun. Piggie suggests they try to make the reader (that's you!) say a word. The logic is pretty straight-forward. '
If the reader reads out loud,
' reasons Piggie, he figures he can make him or her say '
Banana!
'
O
f course Piggie is right and Elephant finds the situation so funny he can't stop laughing. He can't stop, that is, until the bespeckled pachyderm realizes that the book will soon be over.
'
The book ends?!
' shouts Elephant. '
When will the book end!?!
' '
Page 57,
' replies Piggie.
N
ow something has to be done because Elephant is ready to say '
good-bye
' to the reader. Fortunately, Piggy has a simple plan to handle this infuriating problem. Whether it works or not, of course, will depend on you, the reader!

he winner of two
Theodore Geisel Medals
(2008 and 2009), this series has reached classic status in children's literature. Not only do youngsters four to eight years of age love Piggy and Elephant, but even older young people enjoy coming back to visit with these friends.
