f you are a soccer fan you'll certainly recognize the author's name. The first player to win three World Cup medals, Pelé played for Brazil and his worldwide popularity helped the sport expand in countries where soccer was not yet a national pastime.
T
his picture book for youngsters three years of age and older sets forth all the reasons Pelé loves the game so much. '
I loved making the ball do what I wanted it to do,
' he writes. '
When I was on the field, I was part of something special. I was part of the team.
'
Q
uite honestly, the text of this book isn’t anything special, but Frank Morrison's action illustrations showing young players enjoying the sport make up for the lackluster narrative.
C
hildren will probably love this book because the artist manages to make the pages come alive. You'll notice a soccer ball is pictured in each two page action spread and that children are furiously engaged in playing the game.
