On the first page you'll find my family tree. As you will see, there are branches of the shark family with a flattened body, rounded body, one dorsal fin, and two dorsal fins. Other physical distinctions set us apart from one another too. I bet you'll be surprised to discover that some members of my family are only about 8 to 10 inches long but others are 49 feet in length and weigh 15 tons. You'll see where we migrate in the ocean and what type of habitats we like to hang out in. There's a whole section of my book about how we hunt for food, and target prey with all six of our senses. Another really interesting part I think you'll like is learning how we relate to people. From myths and legends to movies, stories and artwork, we have been part of man's history for centuries. You'll also want to read why we are endangered and what must be done to make sure my kind doesn't eventually disappear from the Earth's oceans and seas. I bet you didn't know that people make leather from my skin and medicine from my cartilage. Some individuals use my teeth to make jewelry, my fins for soup, and sell open shark jaws as souvenirs. Now that's nasty but it explains why some of us are endangered species. If you are in elementary school you'll find this a very useful book for doing research about sharks. There are lots of color pictures, diagrams and suggestions on where you can find even more detailed information about me and other members of my family.
