ound in many wetland areas, Great Egrets feed on crayfish, frogs, snakes, algae and small fish. Their plumage was once so sought after that in the late 19th century an ounce of egret feathers was worth an ounce of gold.

ecause of their valuable feathers, Great Egrets were nearly hunted to extinction but their numbers have been greatly restored, although pollutants in wetlands still pose a risk to the birds.
