Laura Amy Schlitz's Night Fairy, Flory, 'was born a little before midnight when the moon was full', which makes this the time of day her magic is always strongest. She's proud of her wings, 'pale green with amber moons on them.'

One night, young Flory, 'as tall as an acorn', encounters a bat who accidentally damages her wings. Falling into 'a giant's garden', she discovers that she can no longer fly and takes refuge in a birdhouse. Nourishing herself on dew and pollen, and no longer safe at night, Flory decides to become a day fairy.

The young fairy faces a hungry squirrel and learns a stinging spell. She teaches the squirrel to cooperate, earns his friendship, and rides around the garden on him. She helps a hummingbird trapped in a spiderweb, defends its eggs from a predator, and fends off a raccoon, with help from a surprising source. And she makes a true friend.

The Night Fairy is a sweet and engaging chapter book - enhanced by Angela Barrett's delicate illustrations - about how fear and misunderstanding can turn to hatred, but acts of kindness can build new understanding and friendship.
