is based on the play of the same name which was produced by the Kennedy Center. Adapted by Ronald Kidd from the play written by Karen Zacarias, this is the humorous tale of three youngsters who, while on a tour of the White House, find themselves on a romp through history.
W
hile on a class field trip, Annie, José and Dee become separated from their group and then encounter George Washington. The nation's first president steps out of the framed portrait that is a centerpiece of the East Room. He then escorts the youngsters back through history where they meet the children of some of the past presidents.
C
arolyn Kennedy, Susan Ford and Tad Lincoln, along with their famous parents, fill out the cast, but Dolley Madison, who saved Washington's portrait when the White House was burned during the War of 1812, also makes a cameo appearance.
F
irst Lady Michelle Obama provided an opening for this adaptation in which she says, '
This book can open the doors of the White House to you in ways that even a personal tour never could. That's what books do: They show us new worlds, reveal our history, and open our eyes to new ways of seeing things.
