Nathan lives on the fifth floor of an eight-story building. Every day he rides the elevator when going between the lobby and his family's apartment. The elevator man lets Nathan sit on the foldout chair and run the controls. While Nathan dreams of someday being an elevator man, the elevator man dreams of becoming a doorman.

The elevator soon closes for renovation, and Nathan temporarily uses the service elevator. But, he discovers his elevator man doesn't operate this elevator, and he doesn't know what happened to him. After some weeks, the renovated elevator opens for use. But so much has changed ... and Nathan's beloved elevator man is still missing!

This is a story about a little boy who learns to adjust to change. Author Stanley Trachtenberg's Nathan is a delight: He has his own opinions, is curious, and, of course, impatient. Does he sound like any little ones you know? The illustrations by Paul Cox, with their retro feel, perfectly fit Trachtenberg's narrative. Fully detailed, they superbly capture the personalities of the characters - including the dog's. Cox's portrayals of Nathan's frazzled father are my favorites. This book will keep children entranced.
