Fisher, animal agony columnist, answers some pretty interesting questions sent in by his feathered and furry admirers. In this picture book for children four and older the clever bird fields queries about why some beetles are never thirsty, why it rains so much in a rain forest, and why you should stay out of trees during a lightning storm. The letters Dr. K receives from critters seeking advice pose some very thorny questions. For example, Fennece Fox wants to know why she's been told it's a foolish idea to consider visiting her cousin in the Arctic. Hot and Bothered in Bengal (an elephant) is sick of sun and asks 'What good does all this sunshine do?' He also needs some tips on keeping cool. Nestled in among all the letters and replies you'll also discover two page spreads that explain natural phenomenon such as the water cycle, ice and snow, dangerous storms, and the seasons. This clever, humorous approach to teaching a youngster about natural science will hopefully serve as a catalyst inspiring the child to eventually look for even more detailed information about the subject. The Ask Dr. K. Fisher series also includes books about creepy-crawlies, animals (Why does everyone want to eat me?), reptiles and dinosaurs (Why do I have a big lump in my tail?) You've heard the old cliché that education should be fun. Claire Llewellyn takes that idea seriously and this series provides ample proof that learning and having fun are compatible concepts!
