E
d Young both wrote and illustrated
Hook
, a story about a bird named Hook who is different from others. It isn't long before his adoptive mother, a hen, realizes he's meant for greater things. As she encourages him to climb to ever greater heights, fearlessly spread his wings, and jump, he is helped to discover where he fits, and he soars above the others.
I
t is a difficult thing to tell a moving, engaging, and fully-fleshed story in few words, but Young has accomplished it with
Hook
. The story has less than 100 words, all compelling, none wasted. Young, a Caldecott Award winner, illustrates his book with vibrant pastels on speckled burnt sienna paper, a style that complements the delicate yet powerful story.
