This Sookie Stackhouse novel begins with an earth shattering revelation - the Were people come out to a world still reeling from learning there are vampires in their midst (the Were revelation goes better at the bar where Sookie works than in other areas).

In Texas, Sookie's boss's mother is shot by her surprised husband and Sookie is left in charge of the bar while Sam rushes to her side. Right away, things slip out of control. Sookie's werepanther sister-in-law is murdered and hung on a crucifix outside the bar. Before Sookie has time to react to that, she finds herself pledged to Eric, and later being attacked by fairies who are at war with her great-grandfather, a fairy prince.

Dead and Gone is written with nonstop tension. Sookie and the reader hardly have time to think things over before she is hit with another life-threatening crisis. Her problems all come crashing down and Sookie is tested beyond her wildest imagination. Sookie and the reader are both glad when this story is over.

The Southern Vampire mysteries are among my favorite. I'll keep reading them as long as Harris writes them, but this one has some inconsistencies and a few holes in the plot. In spite of that I enjoyed Dead and Gone and I'll be ready for the next in the series.
