The Please and Thank You Book: Little Golden Book    by Barbara Shook Hazen & Emilie Chollat Order:  USA  Can Golden Books, 2009 (1974) Hardcover     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson The Please and Thank You Book, a Little Golden Book by Barbara Shook Hazen and illustrated by Emilie Chollat, is all about manners, something most of us have to work on with our children. Hazen helps with that by presenting morals relating to manners and good social behavior in verse, starting with Bears Always Share and ending on Smile, Crocodile (the message of the latter being that you'll keep friends better if you don't spread gloom). She finishes with the encouraging Be Glad You're You! I rather like Don't Be Grabby, Gorilla ('Gorillas are rude. / They grab their food') and Not So Wild, Cats! ('Wildcats make their mother roar / The way they slam the kitchen door.') But there are good messages in all the verses - now if we could only get kids to listen to them!
