Forget counting sheep - teach little ones the alphabet while cuddling them to sleep at night with The Sleepy Little Alphabet: A Bedtime Story from Alphabet Town, written in rhyme by Judy Sierra, and charmingly and amusingly illustrated by Melissa Sweet. 'It's sleepytime in Alphabet Town. / As moms and dads run round and round, / the little letters skitter-scatter, / helter-skelter - what's the matter?' Well, as any parent or caregiver reading this has already figured out, those little (lower case) letters aren't ready to give up on the day's activities yet - and we soon find out how they're dawdling, one by one, while their (upper case) parents look on. I rather like 'h tries standing on her head. / i and j jump on the bed' but every letter of the alphabet is a winner in the staying-up stakes, though they get wearier and wearier till we get all the way to 'Who's that snoring Z z z's?' of course. I love this book, its little letters getting more and more tired as the alphabet progresses. It belongs on nursery bookshelves right beside Goodnight Moon.
