F
olksinger, musician and storyteller George Ella Lyon has written a lullaby that she has transformed into a picture book. The ballad-like lyrics are soothing and mellifluous and are, of course, perfect for bedtime. In the book, a child is being put to bed by her parents, and the book reinforces that all creatures on earth must sleep, and that sleep is a good thing.
T
he author sings
Sleepsong
on her website. Now that I have heard the words in the book set to her folksy style of music, I prefer the words as a song. I think that the next time I read this book to my children, I will play the music in the background and they can follow along in the book with the pictures; however, the words in the book are in a slightly different order than the song lyrics on the website.
I
adore the dreamlike watercolor illustrations, which blend vibrant colors with gentle shadows. To hear the author sing the song, you can log on to her website at
