S
hy toddlers and preschoolers will relate to Lauren Thompson's cuddly story of a timid little lamb. Wee Little Lamb is most comfortable hiding behind his mother. When other animals ask him if he'd like to play or even just say hello, he always refuses, preferring the security of his mother's company.
I
t is only when an equally shy mouse draws him out that the lamb decides to take a brave step forward: the two form a tentative friendship and stay together, though their mothers are close by.
D
evelopmentally appropriate for the youngest of children, the book's appeal lies not only in its simplicity but in John Butler's beautiful, soft-edged pencil illustrations.
