To carry out her royal duties, Princess Bess has a dress for every occasion, including many changes of clothes throughout the day. She hints at the beginning of the book that she has a favorite outfit, though she must keep that a secret. 'Her afternoon was busy too. At a joust she wore pale blue Then changed into another dress For her daily game of chess. She changed again at half past three to join the king for cake and tea.' After the royal ball that evening, Princess Bess is exhausted, so she removes the last dress of the day and flops into bed in her underwear: her favorite item of clothing, as it is revealed. We are reminded that underneath all the glamour lies a typical little girl who is just as comfortable in pajamas as in ball gowns. The whimsical illustrations, full of pinks and purples and other pastels, are reminiscent of the Fancy Nancy series. This picture book will appeal to frilly little girls everywhere.
