I
t is possible to write a good children's book on just about any topic – even poop. In fact,
Everyone Poops
by Taro Gomi is not just a good book – it's a classic. That book skillfully mixes fun illustrations, an easy story and a biological message – elevating it to something that should be on every child's bookshelf. (Or near every potty seat.)
N
ow another children's author (and pediatrician), Charlotte Cowan, has published
The Moose with Loose Poops
. This is part of a medical series published by Dr. Cowan under her own publishing house, The Hippocratic Press.
T
he story is straightforward. A little moose named Miles develops a stomach bug and spends an unpleasant couple of days vomiting and having diarrhea. Miles is unnerved by the illness, but his parents and doctor reassure him. A short time later he feels better.
D
r. Cown seeks to reassure new, nervous parents and she includes a pull-out guide in the back of the book advising them how to act in real-life cases. Though obviously she has good intentions, Dr. Cown's book is something of a stinker. The illustration of Miles' first vomit is gross and the story is otherwise unremarkable. There is nothing cute, entertaining, or biologically interesting here.
S
ome illnesses might need their own hardcover book costing parents $17.95, but a 24-hour virus should not be one of them.
I
t's best to wash your hands of this book.
