arry Bliss's
Luke on the Loose
is one in a new series of '
First comics for our earliest readers
' - an approach that seems to me to be an excellent way to encourage reluctant early readers. Note that Harry Bliss is a well known illustrator, famed for
Diary of a Worm
among other picture books.
W
hile his dad is engaged in '
(Boring Dad Talk)
' in Central Park, Luke starts chasing pigeons. As he hares off in excited - and very determined - pursuit, his dad is forced to admit to his mom (by cell phone) that he's lost their son! Meanwhile, we see who's caught in amusing (on the page anyway) collateral damage from Luke's rampage all across the city and up to its heights.
F
iremen eventually extract a napping Luke from the roof where his pigeons finally roosted. Kids of all ages will love the adventures
Luke on the Loose
gets into - and the trouble he causes all sorts of adults, as well as the amusing animal asides along the way, like the squirrel who tells us that '
This kid is nuts!
