B. Lewis's colorful and emotive illustrations bring that vibrant community - and the caring people in it - to life. It begins: 'Early Saturday morning, Daddy comes to wake me up with our secret knock. Bippity-be-bop-bop! Bippity-be-bop-bop!' The boy is eagerly anticipating his very first haircut at the barbershop and his dad is all smiles! When they stop for breakfast on the way at Mr. J's, he gives the boy a double chocolate milk and tells him to 'Be brave, Little Man', a refrain echoed by other community members they meet. Though Mr. Seymour, the barber shows him all sorts of styles on a poster on the wall, the boy wants his hair cut just like his father's. And when the clippers scare the boy, Daddy shares a trick or two on how to be brave. When it's his dad's turn with the barber, he 'says he wants a haircut just like mine.
