T
his is the spare story of a lost bear. Actually, the bear isn't so much lost as confused as to what he is doing in the city.
I
t seems as if he knew he had a purpose for being there, and he wanders around trying to recall just exactly what that is, all the while carrying his trumpet. He meets a few people and lives on the streets, where, sadly, he comes across other lonely, homeless or lost people who seem as bewildered as he is.
T
he mystery is solved when he sees a sign posted that he is to perform in a concert. Unfortunately, his trumpet was stolen, but he finds a homeless person, who lends him a trumpet that she has in her shopping cart. When he plays the trumpet for a crowd of people, Addis Berner Bear finally realizes his purpose in this world.
T
he watercolor pictures are lovely and they tell much of the story, but I doubt that young children will fully comprehend this melancholy picture book.
