A
new book is both a trick and a treat.
I
t's
Goodnight Goon
, a parody of the Margaret Wise Brown classic,
Goodnight Moon
. Author/illustrator Michael Rex imitates Brown's verse nicely. Here's an example:
'
In the cold gray tomb
There was a gravestone and a black lagoon
And a picture of -
Martians taking over the moon.
'
T
hough the book is perfect for Halloween, young readers are sure to enjoy it any time. Since its release by G.P. Putnam's Sons in August, it has been soaring up the New York Times bestseller list.
R
ex struck exactly the right chord, allowing little ones to delight in a pajama-covered monster who bids good night to all the mummies and goons in his tomb and under his bed. On the book jacket, Rex pays tribute to Wise Brown, saying he was big fan of the original
Goodnight Moon
, but felt it is '
severely lacking in big-toothed monsters and small creatures in peril.
' Well, he has certainly made up for that!
A
nd what about his illustrations ? Boo-tiful!
