A
fter Simon's ninth birthday party, he asks his dad why he was so emotional when he blew out his candles. His dad explains that candles have a special significance to him. When his dad was nine, he was diagnosed with leukemia. He had wished for a dog and God sent Buddy into his life.
I
t turned out that Buddy had cancer, too. Buddy's illness, and later death, helped Simon's dad deal with his own illness. An angel in a dream showed him how everyone, including animals, have a candle that represents their inner light. It is designed to shine as a beacon of hope to others. Simon's dad is reminded of this, and Buddy, whenever he sees a candle.
