A
new Kevin Henkes book release is always a cause to rejoice. This prolific, Caldecott-winning author has captured the attention of countless children with such wonderful books as
Lily's Purple Plastic Purse
,
Wemberly Worried
,
Kitten's First Full Moon
, and one of my daughter Jessica's favorites,
Jessica!
H
enkes latest picture book has a dreamlike quality to it. Old Bear is cozy in his cave, hibernating for the winter. He has dreams of his youth as a young cub, depicted by images of springtime and colorful flowers, then summertime and a blueberry rain. He continues his reverie with dreams of the autumn and winter seasons. To his great surprise and delight, when he wakes up, it is indeed a beautiful spring day, a day that mirrors his dreams.
T
he quality of the illustrations is superb - each picture is drawn with bursts of color and framed as in a photo, and just a few words of text accompany the opposite page, making this a nice, pleasant read-aloud.
