T
his wonderful picture book is a follow-up to
Adele & Simon
. In the original, sibling children who live in Paris at the turn of last century, explore their beautiful city after school. During their
adventures, Simon loses various items with each stop.
A
dele & Simon in America
is structured in exactly the same way. This time, Aunt Cecile, who lives in New York City, is taking the children to see America. They visit cities - such as Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., and Santa Fe - which are gorgeously portrayed in an appropriately old-fashioned sequence, with great charm and astounding detail. Despite Adele's warnings, Simon loses something in each city that he visits, and readers will enjoy searching for the lost items, which are subtly hidden throughout the pages.
A
s in the original, the cities and landmarks are elaborated upon via endnotes. A map of the United States is included, an extra learning tool that adds to this book's appeal. Although credibility is strained when Simon's items are inexplicably mailed back to Aunt Cecile's house,
Adele & Simon in America
is nevertheless a gem, and is highly recommended, along with the original.
