'Get candy, get candy, get candy.' Halloween is not your run of the mill picture book. This is clear immediately from the wild and wooly illustrations, the black and orange text that regularly shouts at you, and the audio CD that delivers a live and lively performance by the author. I especially enjoyed the perspective when parents go through the DOWN sequence - 'Slow DOWN! "Sit DOWN!" ... "You're GROUNDED!"' - as they loom large over the reader. The author hits the nail on the head (or rather the rubber band on the mask) as he identifies the chasms between kids' dreams and anticipation of the holiday and its realities - such as ill-fitting costumes and having to wear a winter coat on the big day. Then there's the part where the author remembers 'those last few Halloweens' and the efficiency challenge in candy collection (the 'Halloween 3-Step Program' captures the spirit perfectly). Halloween is not for Halloween first timers who cherish illusions about the holiday, but it's a hoot for pro candy collectors, from six to sixty. My teens enjoyed reading the book and listening to the CD several times over, as did their parents.
