Though it begins in the chilly outdoors of 'darkest December', it's certainly warm inside these charmingly illustrated pages. Young readers are challenged to find inside the book a Dreydel, Menorah, Latkes and Shamash. There are descriptions of what each of these is for. Then we see Grandma Rose lighting the Menorah, with the entire family (including marmalade cat) watching intently. Nora and Dan make latkes ... 'Flip, flap here. / Flip, flop there. / Potato pancakes in the air. / Latkes flying everywhere.' Little Moe makes himself dizzy, while his bigger brother Sam sweetly spins the dreydel for him, and includes him in the fun. Their interaction is touching and real. The family rests after the meal, and then it's time to open presents and party ... 'Love! Light! Hanukkah!' If you celebrate the holiday, then this board book is perfect to explain it to little ones. And if you don't celebrate Hanukkah, use it to show kids that there are different kinds of holidays, just as beloved as those they celebrate.
