My Baby & Me
does a lovely job of engaging a slightly older sibling's interest in a new baby through a series of photographs in which a toddler brother or sister interacts with an infant. Adults will simply enjoy Penny Gentieu's delightful photos of a variety of paired little ones.
I
t begins with a challenge: '
Hey, little baby! / What can
you
do?
' On the next double page spread, we see: '
You can smile? /
I
can too.
' That seques into: '
You can crawl? / Watch
me
go. /
I
go fast - / You go slow!
' Baby bounces while big brother hops (and picks up what baby drops). The elder sibling compares possessions (stuffed animals, chairs, bottle and cup). I especially like the picture in which a brother shares his pride in reading with his small sister.
T
he book ends on a charming and very loving note, restating the opening question as: '
Now, little baby! / What can
we
do?
' ... '
You hug
me
, / and I'll hug
you
!
'
My Baby & Me
would make a thoughtful, inclusive gift for a small child anticipating a new baby brother or sister.
