This is one of a series of Little Princess books that tie in to the animated TV series of the same name. It begins, 'The King's and Queen's royal mischief lives in an enormous castle topped off with turrets and towers.' Though she has lots of friends, her 'best adventures are with Gilbert, her teddy, and her pets, Scruff and Puss.'

In Can I Keep It?, the foursome enjoy a picnic in the castle grounds. After Scruffy leaps into the nearby pond, drenching picnic and picknickers, Little Princess finds a critter in her drink. She then goes the rounds, asking all and sundry what it is, as well as the titular question. She talks to the Admiral, the Maid, the Queen (a serious knitter), the King, and the Gardener (whom she consults on habitat for her new pet).

Then one day, something new appears in Taddy's habitat, and eventually friends are reunited all over the realm. It's a cute story, from which young readers can learn quite a lot about tadpole development and about the demands of keeping pets in general.
