Not every children's book needs to have a lesson, a moral, or a higher purpose. Sometimes the goal is entertainment, or to see your child's face light up with laughter.

A Birthday for Cow! is, in a word, fun. In this very simple text with correspondingly simple drawings (which remind me of Todd Parr's basic artistic style), Pig and Mouse are making a birthday cake for Cow. Duck, who is looking on, keeps presenting a turnip as a potential ingredient, or a cake topper, or to be used as something to mix the batter. Pig and Mouse dismiss all of his suggestions.

But when Cow walks in and sees what has been made for his birthday, he is thrilled:

'Is that what I think it is? Oh, boy, this is the best birthday ever ...
A turnip!
'

A Birthday for Cow! is pure fun for everyone!
