Despite warnings from 'the nice lady next door', his little brother, and the Glassgrinder twins, Michael fills his sandbox with water and jumps in. He mixes mud until 'there was all mud and no Michael'. The mud is very still and then ... 'a great muddy monster shot up. PUDDLEMAN!'

Puddleman splatters mud all over the yard, and makes an amazing mud castle. He glories in mud. Then shaping mud pies makes him hungry, and 'when he was hungry he wanted one thing: PEANUT BUTTER.' But Michael's mom won't let a muddy monster into the house.

Puddleman disguises himself with Michael's cap to get that peanut butter sandwich, but soon succumbs again to the lure of mud puddles, in a tale that appeals to kids of all ages who recall the joys of playing with mud and with imagination.
