This picture book celebrates the love between a grandfather and his grandson. The two are working together in the garden to plant a watermelon patch. They spend time fishing, picnicking, playing basketball and swimming when they are not working in the garden.

Charlie tells his grandfather that he wants to grow a wishing watermelon. Grandpap tries to guess what Charlie will wish for: will it be a dog? butterscotch? a fishing pole? Charlie keeps Grandpap in suspense: his wish is for something much greater.

Later in the summer when the fruit is ready, Charlie pulls watermelon seeds out of the one that he has designated as the wishing watermelon, and at last reveals his wish: for another summer just like this one.

The pictures are bright with earth tones as the dominant color scheme. Watermelon Wishes makes a nice choice for grandparents and grandchildren to read together.
