Kids can have strong likes and, especially, strong dislikes - which they often express forcefully. And adults can have unreasonable expectations of kids' compliance. I've been on both ends of this, as a fairly non-compliant kid myself who passed on those genes to my own sons and reaped my just reward. I love reading Thomas' Snowsuit with children, who usually get very enthusiastic about vocalizing Thomas' loud 'NNNNNO.'

It all starts when mom buys Thomas 'a nice new brown snowsuit', which of course he won't be caught dead in. She gets him to school in it, with great difficulty, and then hands over the problem to Thomas' poor teacher. Thomas refuses to go outside with the others, and he wins this particular set of battles. Enter the principal and the resultant tussle amongst the threesome results in some accidental cross-dressing. Then his friends call on Thomas and he's outside 'in two seconds', snowsuit and all.

I think I like this story (in all its hilarious exaggeration) because it reminds me that kids are people too, and deserve to express what they like and what they don't.
