Patrick McDonnell's previous picture books - The Gift of Nothing and Art - reflect a genius and an out of the box perspective that help readers see the world just a little differently. He does it again in Just Like Heaven.

One day, Mooch takes a catnap under his favorite tree. He awakens to a deep fog - 'He looked left and saw nothing. He looked right and saw nothing.' Wondering where he is, he concludes, 'I must be in heaven!' Being a curious cat, he eventually explores. There's cool dew on his feet, music and a sweet perfume in the air. 'What a great place' muses Mooch.

Continuing, Mooch encounters an unloved, chained dog that growls and barks at him '(as unloved dogs often do)'. Normally Mooch would have run, but this time he does something quite different. When he naps again, he awakens to a normal, fog-free world, his friend Earl nearby. 'Wow, thought Mooch. What a great place. / Just like heaven.'
