Karma Wilson can be counted on for rousing rhymes that make readers want to chant her words out loud. She succeeds in this once more in Animal Strike at the Zoo: It's True!, ably backed up by Margaret Spengler amusing illustrations that do a fine job of conveying animal emotion.

It begins, 'There's an animal strike at the zoo. It's true! / The headlines are telling it all. / The animals quit. "That's it!" "We're through!" / Say all critters from biggest to small.' The elephants stop trumpeting and sit in the shade; the monkeys desist from monkeying around; the leopards won't prowl; the wolf packs don't howl; the tigers don't growl; and the otters all scowl! The zebras paint out their stripes, while the giraffes wear turtlenecks.

What does everyone do? They 'go to the circus instead.' The zookeeper does his best. He upgrades the elephants from peanuts to pecans and gives the monkeys a kiddy pool, but to no avail. Then in walks 'sweet little Sue' who's 'begged for this trip for a year.' Will the animals disappoint her? You'd better read the book and find out - you won't regret it!
