Henry is a happy train, all bright, sparkly colors. But Henry is also vain (he thinks a lot of himself). He especially dislikes rainy days because rain makes spots on his shiny coat.

One particular day, when all of Henry's cars are full of passengers, it begins to rain. Henry stays in the protection of a tunnel, so he won't get wet. He refuses to travel any further, no matter how much the conductor and passengers plead with him. Sir Topham Hatt comes up with a solution. And readers are given blank-lined pages to write answers to questions at the top of those pages, such as 'How would you describe Henry?', and 'How do you feel when it is rainy? Draw yourself.'

Based on Rev. W. Awdry's Railway Series, Henry's Bad Day gives children the opportunity to read, plus add their own words and drawings to the story. Richard Courtney's illustrations are bright-colored drawings, with happy, angry, and sad expressions on the train and passenger faces.
