C
hristmas in New York
is a
splendiferous
pop-up book that celebrates how enthusiastically the Big Apple revels in the holiday. Each gorgeously decorated page has a major center stage display, with folded over descriptive columns, booklets, and pull-outs to either side. Inset at the back is a gift bag for the reader, including a tree ornament and other goodies.
I
t opens on a Radio City stage. To the left, Chuck Fischer speaks of how his
adopted hometown
shares his holiday mantra: '
Decorate Big--Decorate Bright--Decorate Bold
'. There's a history of Santa in New York, and of Radio City and its
Christmas Spectacular
. Next comes the Metropolitan Museum's lovely
Angel Tree
, with a fascinating presentation of the Museum of Natural History's
Origami Tree
on the side.
O
f course the Rockefeller Center is in here, and David Rockefeller shares Christmas family memories, while tiny booklets discuss the NBC, and the Center's history and architecture. And what would a New York Christmas be without the Nutcracker Ballet or Fifth Avenue holiday shopping? Both are included, the former described as a '
Timeless Treat
', and the latter as '
Sugarplums for the Spirit
'. The grande finale? What else but fireworks blazing across a busy Times Square New Year's Eve sky?
T
his is a magnificent holiday keepsake, a book to bring out every year. Use it to explore the history of Christmas, and of New York City with kids. While those who live there or have visited will appreciate
Christmas in New York
most, anyone can enjoy the festivities vicariously through this magical pop-up book (which also makes an impressive gift).
