old onto your hats and get ready for another stormy, non-stop thrill ride in book three of Rachel Caine's
series. At the end of
, warden Joanne Baldwin was killed, reborn as a Djinn, restored to her former human form, and then managed once again to save the world. She also managed to tick off lots of people including her fellow wardens, and most of all, Jonathan, the most powerful Djinn ever created. But before he can wreak vengeance, he's '
' by a troubled teen. Kevin wants payback for his rotten life and plans on using Jonathan to get it. Now it's up to Joanne and her Djinn lover, David, to head to Vegas and nip Kevin's plans in the bud before hell breaks loose all over again.
ut getting close to Kevin is made all but impossible since it's Jonathan who's really in control and determined to make the wardens pay for all the Djinn that have been killed or lost while in warden '
'. Eventually, Joanne and David devise a way to confront Kevin but at a terrible cost. Before Joanne can question Jonathan she's kidnapped by new players who call themselves the '
', beings who have dedicated themselves to freeing all Djinn from warden control and re-aligning the earthly '
'. If that means the destruction of humankind then so be it. By now Joanne has no idea who to believe and who to trust. Even the wardens, including her best friend Lewis (the most powerful warden in existence), seem to be working against her. David is once again lost to her, possibly forever. If she can't figure out a way to '
', how can she go on?
ot only has Rachel Caine come up with a really nifty series concept here, but she also manages to keep each entry fresh and teeming with new plot twists. Her complicated and fascinating warden and Djinn worlds balance each other nicely as Caine creates growing conflict between them. Great characterizations and snappy writing add to the continuity, with potential for so much more. If you haven't tried the
series then don't waste another minute; pick up
, and get reading!
