This blending of the talents of Steven Grant and the late Gil Kane delivers a graphic novel for mature audiences, with extraordinary drawings and vivid colors. The Last Heroes was originally issued under the title EDGE by Malibu Comics Entertainment. The mission of the heroes, 'The Ultimates™', is to save the world. Ordinary men and women are enlisted by Professor James Carnell to participate in an experiment, intended to activate dormant human capacities. Upon the death of Dr. Carnell (natural or deliberate), the Heroes are hunted by their nemesis.

The superhero team, 'The Ultimates™' and the character 'Mr. Ultimate™' (as presented in this graphic novel) were originally conceived and created in 1993 by Grant and Kane. During his youth, Grant became a fan of Kane's. Diligently following the latter's career, Steven Grant had the opportunity in later years to work with Gil Kane. Kane was a comics artist who specialized in super-heroes, including Captain Marvel, 'the essential Spider-Man', the 'Green Lantern', 'The Atom', and 'The Chronicles of Conan'. Steven Grant 'views comics as paper movies', and is noted for the award-winning Badlands.

Grant's vivid dialog and Kane's expressive, innovative style combine in The Last Heroes to offer adult audiences of graphic novels a remarkable find. Note that Grant's Introduction dedicates the book to Kane: 'Gil, this one's for you.'
