Boy Emperor Ping wants his kingdom to be 'as harmonious as the heavens', so he decides to let the heavens choose the new prime minister who will bring this about. Ping assigns a quest to all the children of the land, in order to find the wisest.

In one year's time, each of them must show him what they think is 'the greatest power in the world.' Ping tells them that 'A wise person must be able to see the unseen and know the unknown.' Some children assume the answer lies in building the most powerful weapons. Others vie for the greatest beauty, strive to create the best technology, or try to amass the most money. But a little girl named Sing ponders change, and comes up with a different answer.

Of course, you have guessed who becomes the new prime minister. But read The Greatest Power together to find out exactly what wise young Sing told the Emperor, and to enjoy delightful and detailed illustrations of very many aspects of old China.
