Anita Blake has just finished an all night session raising zombies, when an old acquaintance, Edward the monster hit man, calls in a favour. He wants additional backup for his alter ego Ted Forester in Albuquerque. In Santa Fe Anita finds that twelve people have been murdered, and other victims flayed but magically kept alive.

Complicating the investigation, Ted Forester is, astonishingly, involved with an attractive widow and her two children. Ted's other backups are Olaf, who hates all women, and Bernardo, who loves all women. There is also the vampire Master of the City of Albuquerque, who holds the key to the mystery but will only divulge it if Anita will pay the high price.

Other complications include but are not limited to: a gang of relic smugglers somehow linked to a ruthless Government agency; a clan of werewolves; the near awakened God whose agents have carried out the murders; and Anita's attempts to make sense of her interactions with all the men ( and monsters ) in her life.

Obsidian Butterfly has action on every page with Anita Blake providing her own inimitable mix of tough minded bravado, guile and humour.
