I
'm a long-time fan of T. Kingfisher's works, for her delightful
Swordheart
series and new perspectives on fairytales like her
Thornhedge
take on
Sleeping Beauty
.
Wolf Worm
is just as imaginative but with a strong vein of horror running throughout.
I
t's 1899 and skilled scientific illustrator Sonia Wilson is unemployed after her father's death, when reclusive Dr. Halder offers her work as his assistant, to illustrate his enormous collection of rare insects. Without other options, she takes this opportunity and moves to his isolated, immense, run down North Carolina manor house.
T
he woods are spooky and scary and her employer is evasive and sinister. One local tells her that '
The devil walks these woods
' and another warns her of
blood thiefs
. Sonia starts to wonder what became of the illustrator before her, who did exquisite work - and gradually learns who Louisa was and what happened to her and her lover.
S
onia learns that both animals and humans have been found dead in the woods, oddly cut up, and that Halder was involved. She does get to the bottom of it all with help from her predecessor's journals as well as housekeeper Rose Kent and her husband Jackson, and Lumbee healer Ma Kersey ... and some live happily ever after.
