Though I'm a long time fan of Kelley Armstrong's fantasy and time travel series, I don't much like horror, which affected my appreciation of I'll Be Waiting.

The lead is Nicola Laughton, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis and never expected to live into her thirties or to meet the love of her life. She and Anton dreamed of many happy years together but then he died in a car crash, his last words to Nicola, 'I'll be waiting for you.'

Someone at the scene shared those words with the press, leading to Nicola's hounding by spiritualists. She's seen too many con artists, along with a new friend, Shania, whom she met in grief counseling. Her best friends, Libby and Jin, intervene.

To help her quit, they set up a séance with a well reputed professor of parapsychology, Dr. Davos Cirillo, at the Lake Erie beach house where Nic and Anton had many happy memories. Odd things start happening there and Nic is haunted by nightmares from her past.

The story moves back and forth in time to reveal that past and the escalating tension in the beach house group, none of whom should know of Nic's history - but someone clearly does. After they find a corpse, there's a crescendo of violence, and ghosts (friendly and vengeful) involve themselves in what transpires.
