Soul Taken: Mercy Thompson #13    by Patricia Briggs Order:  USA  Can Ace, 2022 (2022) Hardcover, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Soul Taken is the thirteenth in Patricia Briggs' popular fantasy series starring Mercy Thompson, a down to earth mechanic and coyote shapechanger. She was raised by werewolves and has befriended ancient vampire Stefan, as well as iron-kissed fae Zee. Though I've missed quite a few episodes in the series, it was easy to immerse myself again in its engaging but perilous world. At this stage, Mercy is mate to Columbia Basin werewolf pack Alpha Adam, who was cursed by witch Elizavata in a previous episode - at any time he could morph into a dangerous, uncontrollable monster. A powerful vampire, who had stalked Mercy and appears to be insane, has gone missing, and Mercy can only contact her friend Stefan (who seems under some sort of compulsion) through dreams. Misinformation is circulating - that Adam's pack is killing their allies, including vampires, white witches - and humans. It all centers on a very powerful, very old artefact, the Soul Taker, that Zee has hunted through the ages. The pack's investigation into the killings culminates in a series of magical battles. Their ultimate enemy intends to kill everyone close to Mercy - those she cares about and those who care about her. It's an exciting read, with humor throughout - especially the magicked, misbehaving over-protective car. Soul Taken is a strong episode in an entertaining series.
