Having visited Iceland and seen their unusual breed of horses, I was immediately intrigued by Sarah Tolmie's historical fantasy, All the Horses of Iceland. It tells how Eyvind of Eyri left Iceland as a crewman and became a wide-traveller.

Eyvind left his first crew when the captain became Christian. In Helmgard, he signed on with a merchant to trade inland through Khazaria to the Mongolian steppes for horses. So began a long journey through many different cultures, dealing with war, ghosts, and magic. Eyvind saw a white mare that seemed invisible to others. He was told that it's a wind horse, 'a human soul in horse's flesh.' He invested in horses, and the white mare kept them safe and guided them home to Iceland.

Back home, Eyvind became a rich man by selling most of the horses. He introduced felting to Iceland. He kept the white mare and continued to see ghosts. He raised sons, though not his own. If you've ever wondered about Norse wide-travellers, you'll enjoy this epic tale.
